The origins of our pharmacy
This is the story of a Sorian woman who surprised her family when she said she wanted to become a pharmacist, and why?
It all began in her childhood, during the long summer evenings in her hometown, San Pedro Manrique. Her beloved aunt Esther, used to take her to the Pharmacy to visit her friend Fácun, who worked as an assistant. Little did she know, something sparked inside her that would lead her on an exciting journey to pursue a dream and inspire many others along the way – the passion for pharmacy.
After obtaining her degree from the Complutense University and practicing for a year in a pharmacy in Madrid, she returned to her hometown to work at Soria Natural. However, her true aspiration was to become a Community Pharmacist. When the opportunity arose to acquire the Tardelcuende Pharmacy in 2003, she didn’t hesitate for a second.

It was incredibly exciting to see her name on the façade: Lda. Raquel Martínez García, her very own healthcare establishment. This would be a place where she could fully unleash her profession, dedicated to serving her patients, not only through pharmaceutical advice but also with understanding, empathy, and the closeness that comes with being a rural pharmacist. For 10 years, she was able to assist many people from her community, feeling loved and appreciated. This is the reason why, even today, she still considers herself the “pharmacist of Tardelcuende.”
It was at that moment when she wanted to do more. She felt the need to advocate for pharmacies, particularly those in rural areas, including the depopulated regions of Spain. She decided to take a step forward and began working at the College of Pharmacists in Soria as a secretary. Two years later, she became the President of the college in 2013.
As one moves forward, opportunities arise. A new opportunity presented itself when a train arrived at her doorstep with a destination to Almazán (2013-2021). This gave her the chance to continue growing as a professional by embracing an innovative, patient-centered, and trustworthy approach to pharmacy practice. Thus, she established Farmacia La Villa

There, she discovered the value and importance of being on call, as the light of the pharmacy never goes out. It was during this time that she experienced the pandemic firsthand, working on the front lines. It was an incredibly challenging period, but it made her prouder than ever to be a pharmacist.
She carried this pride with her when she was appointed President of the Pharmacists’ Association of Castilla y León (2016-2018) and Secretary General of the General Council of Official Colleges of Pharmacists of Spain (2018 to the present).
However, this journey is not undertaken alone, and now is the time to acknowledge her family and team. Many people have accompanied and supported her throughout this journey.
Please allow her to highlight her parents, sister, and especially her husband Ignacio, who believed in her from the beginning. He relocated his life to Soria and caught the pharmacy spirit, always supporting her on this exciting journey. Without them, none of this would have been possible.
She would also like to mention two of her great professionals, pharmacy technicians, and pillars of support: Montse, who started with her in Tardelcuende, and Esther, who dedicated her entire professional life to the pharmacy in Almazán.
